The Cove

June 28, 2010

Remember when I recommended that your company set boundaries to limit the activities and issues you are willing to consider organizing or recommending to guests? One of the issues I recommended considering is dolphin swims.

Maybe your hotel is located on or near the coast, where there are water parks or marinas that offer a swim with dolphins program. These have become increasingly popular in recent years for adults and families with children.

The problem is that dolphins are generally considered to be ill-suited for captivity, which means that they can become irritated and aggressive when captured and held for shows like this. They can also be injured during capture. The question I posed was: are you open to recommending dolphin swims, if this is offered in your area?

Before you answer that question, or before you plan a vacation to the beach with a side trip to swim with dolphins, check out this movie. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature this year. Educate yourself about the reality of this industry before you decide to participate in any way.
